American Airlines Terminal 8 & 9 Problems - As of Feb 2007 - Parking Project Has Been Completed and Inside Pick-Ups are Permitted

Beginning Monday, April 4, the parking lot directly across from the American Airlines terminals at John F. Kennedy International Airport will be closed for construction of a new, state-of-the-art parking facility. The new facility, which will provide 1,940 public parking spaces, is expected to be completed in early 2007. That doesn't help us right now. Any of you who have experienced problems can understand the frustration our drivers and dispatchers are going through.

Passengers pick up's will be dramatically affected. Here are the scenarios:

1) Travelers are encouraged to collect their luggage and head to the middle pick-up island outside of the terminal. If the middle island is crowded, head to the outer island.

2) Call our (800) 822-8767 number and advise the dispatcher where you are and how the driver can identify you. The car will roll up within 5 minutes, depending on the congestion.

3) If inside Meet & Greet is required, the chauffeur must park his car at another lot, take the train and meet you at baggage claim. There are additional fees for this, including a parking surcharge and the cost of the train. The passenger can then opt to go with the driver, or wait for him to drive the car up to the island. That can take over 20 minutes.

This construction is a major inconvenience to everyone. So, please be patient...our cars can't fly over the long lines of vehicles. Your travelers MUST communicate with us to make the pick-ups go smooth. I would advise forwarding this to all of your travelers. Just think of having your spouse pick you up under these conditions...how often would you call them on the cell phone?

More history for JFK buffs:

In 1999, American Airlines began a seven-year program to build the largest passenger terminal at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, New York. The project is a $1 billion venture that requires the demolition of its existing two terminals (8 and 9), and their replacement with a mega terminal with 55 gates, 37 for large jets and 18 for American Eagle's regional jets. Designed to accommodate more than 14 million passengers annually, the mammoth 184,000m2 terminal, with three concourses, will be built in four phases for completion by summer 2006.
